In this newsreel segment filmed by Fox Movietone, General Manager Charles Moses explains how the ABC imitates the soundscape of a cricket match to accompany its commentary.

It was never the broadcaster’s intention to deceive listeners; contemporary press reports explicitly referred to updates being communicated via cable message, with sound effects created in the studio.

Rather, Moses establishes rapport with his audience by taking them behind the scenes of radio broadcasting and into the studio with legendary cricket commentator Alan McGilvray, not just describing but demonstrating how the sounds are made; in a sense, he is revealing the tricks of his trade.
