What is take Three?

The NFSA’s Take Three initiative offers eligible applicants up to 3 minutes (180 seconds) of NFSA 100%-owned footage and/or audio and up to 10 stills with no licence fee for educational, non-commercial use.

The material may be used for any project including:

• films and documentaries
• live productions such as dance, cabaret, theatre and opera
• visual arts and public art works
• music and sound productions
• podcasts
• research
• lectures and presentations
• articles and papers.

Who can apply?

The applicant must either be:

1. an Australian student enrolled and studying at an Australian education institution who is producing a project as part of their coursework for educational, non-commercial use only

OR

2. an Australian teacher currently employed by an Australian education institution whose students are producing an artistic work as part of their coursework for educational, non-commercial use only

OR

3. an Australian emerging filmmaker/artist without income for this project from either:

• Australian pay or free-to-air television presales
• government funding, including from federal or state funding agencies

 OR

4. an Australian academic currently employed by an Australian tertiary education institution who is producing a project as part of their employment for educational, non-commercial use only.

Who cannot apply?

• corporate video producers
• advertising agencies
• broadcasters
• news and current affairs producers
• cultural and educational institutions
• applicants whose project has received formal income such as government funding – including funding from federal or state agencies.

Which collection material can be accessed?

Collection material that can be accessed via the Take Three initiative is restricted to titles that are 100% NFSA-owned. These materials are primarily concentrated in the Film Australia Collection.

A limited number of titles held in the wider collection are also 100% NFSA-owned. But please be aware that most materials in the wider collection – such as TV news, current affairs, feature films, newsreels and documentaries etc – are owned by third party copyright holders and are therefore not available via the Take Three initiative.

We encourage all potential applicants to undertake some collection research to establish if any 100% NFSA-owned materials are likely to be relevant to your project before you apply. Terms and conditions

1. Applicants must supply:

• a completed application form with synopsis of project and details of the archival footage, audio, stills you require
• proof of eligibility (for example, current student card from Australian tertiary education institution, filmmaker/artist CV).

Costs

2. Fees to supply copies of collection material are not waived as part of Take Three and will be charged at the NFSA Access rates.

3. Where the approved applicant is a student, the NFSA’s fees are capped at one x one-hour research/service fee.

4. Licence fees for material additional to the 3 minutes and 10 stills may be negotiated and will be charged at standard NFSA Access rates.

RIGHTS

5. The successful applicant enters into a contractually binding licence agreement with the NFSA.

6. The NFSA licence agreement covers All Rights, All Media / Worldwide / In Perpetuity.

7. NFSA 100%-owned material is licensed on a non-exclusive basis, for one use in one production as specified in the licence agreement. Uses outside those expressed in the licence agreement require the permission of the NFSA.

8. NFSA staff will advise of any restrictions that may apply (for example, relating to copyright, talent, location, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property rights) at the time of footage and/or stills selection.

CREDITING THE NFSA

9. Acknowledgement of the NFSA must be in accordance with the Licence Agreement.

USE OF NFSA MATERIALS

10. Use of NFSA materials must be in accordance with the Licence Agreement.

RIGHT OF REFUSAL

11. The NFSA retains the right in its absolute discretion to refuse any applications for the Take Three Licence Agreement.
