Join us on 8 December for the Canberra book launch of Those Dashing McDonagh Sisters: Australia’s first female filmmaking team by Mandy Sayer. Paulette, Phyllis and Isabel McDonagh were the first women in Australia to form their own production company and their trailblazing story will be told in conversation with Mandy, supported by clips and images from the NFSA collection.
We’re happy to say that Elvis is still in the building, with an encore screening of Baz Luhrmann’s ELVIS (2022). Included with tickets will be access to our updated Australians & Hollywood exhibition, where you’ll have the chance to see some of the phenomenal costumes from the film before the screening!
This month, we’re also getting festive with a trio of films to bring holiday cheer to all! Beginning with Die Hard (1988) on 16 December with Buy-One-Get-One-Free tickets to debate with a friend if it’s a Christmas movie or not! Then on 17 December, The Grinch (2018) will warm even the grumpiest heart with a new spin on the classic story by Dr Seuss. And make sure you don’t miss one of the most enduring Christmas films of all time, with Miracle on 34th Street (1947) on 18 December.
Arc Cinema is proud to partner with the Antenna Documentary Film Festival for a retrospective on the work of maverick documentary filmmaker Les Blank. Over a more than 50-year career, Les Blank has established himself as an uncompromising auteur, capturing different cultures and communities that are rarely seen on screen. Specially chosen for this retrospective, these films demonstrate major themes of Les Blank’s career, such as music, communities, filmmaking and food. Tickets are available at the Antenna Documentary Film Festival website.
Rounding out an already packed month of amazing screenings is Ana Lily Amirpour’s genre-defying vampire horror A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014), the story of a family dealing with grief and change in Moja Vesna (2022) and a look at the incredible campaign to save Tasmania’s Franklin river in the 1980s in the AACTA Award-nominated documentary Franklin (2022).
