Australian Mediatheque

Located in Federation Square in Melbourne, the Australian Mediatheque is a collaboration between the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the NFSA. Launched as a resource centre the Mediatheque allows you to view digitised content as well as many other collection items available from both NFSA and ACMI collections. An example is this clip from Living Melbourne, a compilation of Australia’s earliest recorded films which includes the 1896 Melbourne Cup. Featured below is footage of Flinders St Station, circa 1910.

One of our newly curated packages for the Mediatheque include Victoria’s Murray Region which focuses on films of region from the 1920s through 1940s.

Other memorable Australian feature films that can be viewed at the Mediatheque include Storm Boy, Dot and the Kangaroo, the hilarious The Adventures of Barry McKenzie, Paul Hogan’s Crocodile Dundee. You can also view television series like Skippy, TV game shows such as Blankety Blanks featuring Graham Kennedy and some early footage of AFL matches from the 1920s.

Research assistance is also available to suit your needs, whether you are a student, academic, budding filmmaker or work in the field of audiovisual arts or education. Additional titles from non-digitised formats and access to 16mm and 35mm films are available by booking in advance.
