Cooee Cabaret returns

Having cut our teeth and tested our chicken wings in Mildura and Gunnedah earlier this year, we’re prepping the NFSA’s Cooee Cabaret show to head out on the road again later this year.

The Cooee Cabaret is the NFSA’s new live show based on the Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry – a collection of iconic and culturally significant songs, sounds and recordings…like the 'Happy Little Vegemites' and 'Aeroplane Jelly Song' jingles, 'Along the Road to Gundagai' and Waltzing Matilda.

Last week, our fearless cast – Lisa Maza, Nigel Ubrihien and Nielsen Gordon – brought a little Cooee magic to the proceedings for Sound Day 2010 and the announcement of the new additions to the Sounds of Australia registry.

Riding high on the great feedback from the Mildura and Gunnedah shows, it’s time to take Cooee on the road again to share the Sounds of Australia with regional audiences. So where will you hear (and see) the NFSA’s Cooee crew this time?

In November, the Cooee train will be steaming across South Australia and southern Victoria, kicking off in Mt Gambier, and stopping in at Colac, the Potato Shed in Drysdale and Warrnambool, home of The Hen Convention (the first ever recorded sound in Australia).

Early next year, we’ll be taking Cooee to northern NSW and hopefully southern Queensland, heading out of Coffs Harbour and meandering up the coast, calling into Stanthorpe, Warwick and/or Toowoomba.

In each town we go to, we’ll be searching for local performers and musicians to join us as part of Cooee Cabaret – will your choir, band or group share the Cooee stage with us? And we’ll also be looking out for what new sounds of Australia we can discover out beyond the city lights…what are the memorable sounds and songs from your town?

Look out for us on the road, and don’t be afraid to give us a hearty Cooee as you’re passing …Cooooooeee !
