HDTV

Stands for High Definition Television. Television with definition approximately doubled with reference to the conventional TV both vertically and horizontally and with increased picture aspect ratio. A format with a new screen aspect ratio of 16:9 (the current is 4:3) and capable of reproducing twice the resolution in horizontal and vertical dimensions than existing standard definition (SDTV) broadcast systems. HDTV should not be confused with wide screen variants of PAL (PALplus), NTSC or SECAM where the screen shape may change but the quality improvement is small compared with HDTV.There is no agreement for the hoped-for world HDTV studio standard. The only consensus so far is that transmission, for home viewing and contribution, will be digital and compressed using MPEG-2.
