Nitrous acid
Believed to be an intermediate stage in the formation of nitric acid by cellulose nitrate decomposition. Nitrous acid has the formula HNO 2 .
When the nitro group first detach from the cellulose chain during decomposition they combine with the available water to form unstable nitrous acid. This rapidly oxidises to form nitric acid.
