Film image and sound components that have been synchronised with the sound leading by an appropriate amount for printing. Opposite to level sync.
The sound head of a 35mm projector is 19.5 frames ahead of the corresponding image. This means the soundtrack must be printed this far ahead on a length of film.
The sound can be in ‘level sync’ for editing but must be advanced to ‘printer sync’ before printing.
The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia acknowledges Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live and gives respect to their Elders both past and present.
