The veteran (Grant Page) has been wounded by a spear. The fanatic (Gary Sweet) wants to leave him, but the tracker (David Gulpilil) refuses – even when horse-whipped.

Lorrpu (John Sebastian Pilakui) dreams of when he and his friends were initiated, as Botj (Sean Mununggur) arrives back from three months in jail.

Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood) has been expelled from the colony. His dancing upsets the elders, but he finds that Adelie penguins have a much more open attitude.

The young policeman, known in the credits as the follower (Damon Gameau) takes control after his boss, the fanatic (Gary Sweet) opens fire without warning on a family of aborigines.

Harry Beecham (Sam Neill) has waited two years for Sybylla (Judy Davis) to agree to marry. As drought grips the land again, he comes for an answer, but Sybylla explains why she cannot.

After a long winter, Memphis (voiced by Hugh Jackman) prays for the return of the sun. As the thaw begins, the Emperor penguin eggs hatch all over the colony – except for Memphis’s egg.

After the death of the fanatic, the tracker (David Gulpilil) and the follower (Damon Gameau) are captured by the local tribe in this area.

Botj (Sean Mununggurr) sniffs petrol after fighting with his friends Lorrpu and Milika.

The three boys are halfway to Darwin when they come upon Aboriginal paintings in a cliff cave. The camera travels up over the extraordinary landscape as the boys revel in their surroundings.

Bill Heslop (Bill Hunter) entertains a Japanese resort developer (Ken Senga) and his interpreter (Kuni Hashimoto) at a Chinese restaurant.
