This month the legendary musicians from Regurgitator are pulling back the polyester to discuss the creation of their iconic second album Unit. Following the success of their first album Tu-Plang, Unit was a pivotal shift in sound and direction. The bold decision earned the Australian band 5 ARIA awards, including the 1998 ARIA for Album of the Year, and would give us songs that would define an era in Australian music history. Join us on 21 October at 7pm for a book launch and conversation with Ben Ely, Quan Yeomans, Lachlan (Magoo) Goold and Paul Curtis as we delve into the creation of Unit, its influences and the creative process that made it such a classic Australian album. On 30 October we have a special screening of Bruce Beresford’s Paradise Road (1997). It's an Australian film based on a true story set during the Second World War that follows the harrowing journey of a group of women who become prisoners of war. A tale of struggle, sacrifice, courage and hope starring Glenn Close, Cate Blanchett and Julianna Margulies.
On 7 October we screen Clara Chong’s Dark Noise (2022). This gripping independent Australian thriller follows a young woman named Abigail (Imogen Sage). Her estranged father (David E Woodley) has suddenly disappeared in the remote Birra Mountains National Park. When Abigail begins to receive audio logs with clues, she sets out to find him. After the screening, director and writer Clara Chong and production designer Sam Wilde will join us for a Q&A to discuss the film's production, which was shot entirely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our Women Make Film series continues into season 2 this month with Women Make Film Episode 8: Home, Religion & Work. Five years in the making, this epic journey through film history explores how films are made through the compelling lens of some of the world’s greatest directors – all of them women. Each episode is free to watch but complemented by a paid film. This month's episode is paired with Mary Harron’s American Psycho (2000). On 27 October the third instalment of SCIENCE.ART.FILM., in collaboration with the Australian National University, begins with a screening of Martha: A Picture Story (2019) a film about a photographer's journey capturing street art and the culture of surrounding its expression. This fascinating film will be followed by a wide-ranging discussion featuring local artists and researchers studying artistic expressions.
To celebrate Halloween, we have an excellent selection of dark comedy and horror films to look forward to, from the fantastic black comedies Death Becomes Her (1992) and Jennifer’s Body (2009) to John Carpenter's influential slasher Halloween (1978) – on Halloween night – presented in 35mm film print goodness from the NFSA’s collection.
