September at Arc Cinema

Arc Cinema Program at NFSA for September 2022

Canberra Screenings and Events
BY
 James Dyer

Our special event brings the ballroom and its talent to our stage. Baz Luhrmann’s legendary Strictly Ballroom (1992) screens in freshly restored splendour, followed by a Q&A with lead actors Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice. Tickets to the event include a glass of bubbles on arrival, entry to our major exhibition, Australians & Hollywood, before the screening and an afterparty in the NFSA courtyard with ballroom dancing! There will be costumes prizes so channel your inner Fran, Scott or Tina with some costumed sparkle  and celebrate one of Australia’s most beloved films with us on 16 September. Tickets are limited, so reserve yours soon. UPDATE: this event is now SOLD OUT but we have added an encore screening of NFSA Restores: Strictly Ballroom on 18 September at 3pm. Your ticket to the encore screening also gives you access to Australians & Hollywood before the film.

For the second part of the SCIENCE. ART. FILM. series, in collaboration with the Australian National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science and ANU Humanities Research Centre, we have a a free screening and discussion of Steven Soderbergh’s star-studded Contagion (2011). It's an action-thriller that follows healthcare professionals, government officials and everyday people in the midst of a budding pandemic – sound familiar? Contagion has been praised for its accurate depiction of the science in the film. Join Professor David Tscharke, Associate Professor Meru Sheel and Dr Anna-Sophie Jürgens on 1 September as they discuss the science of the film and the mood and feel of pandemic times.

The NFSA's Corrick Collection is a compilation of silent films collected by The Marvellous Corricks, a family of vaudeville-style entertainers who dazzled Australian audiences with music, comedy and film in the early 20th century. We finished a digital restoration of the films in 2021 and this month you can see them in all their glory – revitalised with the addition of new scores by composers from the ANU School of Music. Join us for this unique visual and aural experience on 24 September.

A wonderful gem of independent Australian filmmaking, Platon Theodoris’s The Lonely Spirits Variety Hour (2022) screens on 30 September. Co-written with lead actor Nitin Vengurlekar, you’re in for a wonderfully weird existential comedy with great performances by Nitin and Sabrina Chan D’Angelo. This screening is followed by a Q&A with the director and stars so, if you are interested in independent filmmaking, book in and join the conversation.

Our school holiday program features films from some of the furriest and fuzziest faces in cinema. From bears and pandas to mice and minions, enjoy a day trip with the family at our early 10:30am screenings. Check below for the full line-up.

Please help us keep everyone safe by reading and following our COVID-safety and visitor information and don’t forget to get your Club NFSA card when you arrive.
